The book follows Autumn whose best friend Tavia recently died in a car accident, Shay who is dealing with the loss of her twin sister Sasha to leukemia, and Logan, whose ex-boyfriend Bram has committed suicide. At the same time, however, I thought it was a beautiful read with an important message about how we all grieve in our own way and in our own time, and I thought Woodfolk did a beautiful job of exploring that as she takes us through the grieving process of three teenagers who have lost someone close to them. I felt my heart absolutely breaking for the characters in this book over and over again because their grief was so palpable. In some ways because of its subject matter, it was a difficult book to read. It is a story about love and loss and how overwhelming the grieving process can be. MY REVIEW:Īshley Woodfolk’s The Beauty That Remains is one of the most moving books I’ve read in a long time. Genres: Young Adult Fiction, Contemporary FictionįTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley. Published by Delacorte Press on March 6th 2018 The Beauty That Remains by Ashley Woodfolk Killer Crabs by Guy N. The Kirby’s have forsaken a secure lifestyle for an idealistic organic farming project. Crowds are drawn irresistibly by his strange, haunting, hypnotic music, a weird melody that lingers with the listeners long afterwards, a nuisance by day but terrifying in the nocturnal hours, calling them, commanding them. There had been buskers in the cathedral city of Lichfield for centuries, but never one like Jonjo. Alexander’s books and am always engaged and interested in both her style of writing and the content provided to the reader. I have had the pleasure of reviewing several of Ms. The Modern Witchcraft Guide to Fairies: Your Complete Guide to the Magick of the Fae by Sky Alexander is part of the Modern Witchcraft series published by Adams Media, an imprint of Simon and Schuster publishers. According to some tales, they served as the prototypes from which the human race evolved… 1. They were powerful beings of a semi-divine nature, who may have descended from the gods and goddesses. The fairies of old were nothing like the sugar coated cartoon characters we envision today. What image comes to mind? A miniature girl with gossamer wings and a sparkly dress, a la Disney’s version of Tinker Bell? A benevolent creature who flies about sprinkling fairy dust everywhere, waving her wand to make children’s wishes come true? if so, you are in for a surprise……Like unicorns and mermaids, these magickal entities have been denatured by pop culture, robbed of their mystique and majesty. The Modern Witchcraft Guide to Fairies: Your Complete Guide to the Magick of the Fae by Sky AlexanderĪdams Media, 978-1507215913, 256 pages, June 2021 Mail-Order Marriages by Jillian Hart5/9/2023 The emotions felt a bit rushed at times, not moving naturally or gradually but quickly in order to fit into the story's length. I rooted for the heroine and hurt with her in the climax. I found it enjoyable, though without much depth. Perhaps reading the other two first would have coloured the way I read the story, but as it was, I read it without having read the previous two in the series. I picked up "Mail Order Marriages" not realizing that the first story, "Rocky Mountain Wedding," by Jillian Hart, is the third in a trilogy about three brothers. But he's tough, stubborn and cynical-except in bed with her at night! How can Sophie turn her passionate nighttime lover into a daytime husband who isn't afraid to show he loves his mail-order bride? Newly trained midwife Sophie Grant had hoped marrying respectable John Colburne would be easy as pie. He's strong as a bull, gentle as a lamb, and Elizabeth's heart soon begins to melt…. He's not looking for love, but he expects his wife to act like one-in every sense of the word! Elizabeth has always felt tall and awkward, but Lucas towers over her. Lucas Harrison needs a mother for his sons. But what Melody doesn't expect is to fall for the rugged, closed-off lawman who swears he doesn't believe in love! Gabe Brooks, handsome older brother to the man she was supposed to marry, helps her settle in. Melody Pennington fled to Montana for a new start as a mail-order bride. Wool omnibus edition5/9/2023 The Wool Omnibus consists of Books 1-5 there are now a total of 9 books plus assorted short stories in the series. However, with everyone talking about Wool, I was curious, so I checked out the Omnibus edition. Not OMG terrible bad, but a typical self-published book: stilted, poorly edited, amateurish. I first became aware of Howey when I tried the first book in his Molly Fyde series. Hugh Howey's Wool series has gathered attention mostly because Howey is one of those rare self-publishing success stories who's joined Amanda Hocking in self-publishing lore: he self-published his first few books, they became massively popular, then he signed a print publishing deal with Simon & Schuster while keeping digital rights for himself, and now he's got a movie deal. They are given the very thing they profess to want: They are allowed outside. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. But there are always those who hope, who dream. The world outside has grown unkind, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. This is the story of mankind clawing for survival, of mankind on the edge. The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan5/9/2023 Tan creates a story world with which we can relate to our own lives and use the morals we found there in our reality. Tan also look at the idea of belonging, and when the lost thing finds a place where it doesn’t really belong but is happy, it is questioning the obsession we as humans have of belonging. At the start of the book many adults are around but only the boy seems to see the lost thing, this shows that the adult world are so absorbed in what they are doing themselves that they never stop to look what is right in front of them. This is shown in the way the main character has been presented as well as the lost thing, the reader can relate to both of these characters either by being lost or finding something lost. His picture book ‘The Lost Thing’ reflects on this statement you know that the storybook world Tan has created is not in the slightest bit real, but if you look closer you can start relating it to your real life. Shaun Tan once said “You know it’s not real, but you can’t help but be drawn into the reality of it”. Kevin hart marcus book5/9/2023 If you go to any library and pick a random novel, chances are 50/50 the main character’s mom is dead. One thing I did not like about this book is it uses the dead mom trope. This book also deals with some serious topics incorporated into the silly plot. In my opinion there still aren’t enough books (fiction or nonfiction) about movie making. MARCUS MAKES IT BIG by Kevin Hart with Geoff Rodkey illustrated by David Cooper RELEASE DATE: Comedian Hart’s sophomore middle-grade title, co-authored with Rodkey, explores the ways social media success can impact kids’ relationships and sense of self. It also may inspire the next generation of directors. I like this book because it is very educational about the writing, problems, shooting, progress, reshooting, screening, REshooting, VFX, and the budget that you need to keep an eye on when making a movie. This book is good for readers 10+ years old because although it is a very silly book, I don’t think it would appeal much to most 0–9 year olds. With the help of his friends and a few enemies, Marcus will (at least try to) make a Between writing a screenplay to actually filming, he discovers it may be harder than he thought. In “Marcus Makes a Movie,” a kid named Marcus decides he has to make a movie based on the comic he’s been writing in installments for years. |
